Dru House
It all started in 1995, when Dru House was placed in his mother’s arms for the first time. His Canadian parents, Tina and Jorge, hadn’t expected to adopt a foreign child, but when they saw the photo of the adorably round baby, they knew they couldn’t live without him.
Dru quickly became part of the family, but the neighbourhood children weren’t so nice. They were confused by his blueness, his Dutch accent and his freakishly slender legs. Tina tried to make the most of Dru’s physique by enrolling him in ballet class, but he was too top heavy to be graceful. He was also a terrible soccer player, an even worse football player and couldn’t sing to save his life. And at the age of 6, his ultimate dream of becoming a concert pianist was shattered when he realized he didn’t have arms.
Dru became withdrawn. He squirreled away in his room, only emerging once a day for his favourite meal of Diet Pepsi and apple pannekoeken. He spent most of his childhood tinkering on Tina’s computer and feeling quite sorry for himself.
That is, until he saw a photo of himself on the internet. He recognized his own pretty eyes, mischievous grin and cute little nose, but the legs were plump, misshapen and nothing like his own. Despite the unfortunate legs, we must be related, Dru thought, and immediately sent him an email.
Turns out, they were cousins. That email turned into more emails, and those emails turned into a real friendship—a first for Dru. Over the next few years, they discussed everything computer-related, and even found an online development community where they could truly be themselves. As they got deeper into the Drupal project, more Dru lookalikes came out of the woodwork, and soon Dru had a pack of real friends that loved him for who he was.
Dru gained incredible confidence and grew in ways he never thought possible. He contributed his first module, he mastered Ubercart and he even tried out for Seussical the Musical. And now, he wants to share his experience with you.
